Daniel Horne, Public representative and lay researcher
Daniel is the public representative and lay researcher on ComBAT. He has been an active advisor in a series of projects at the University of York, including being a member of the development and research team for a digital game to help children with phobias (funded by the Wellcome Trust through the Centre for Future Health at the University), being a member of the oversight group for an NIHR-funded evidence synthesis on costs and outcomes of digital interventions (led by applicant Gega) and being a member of the UKRI-funded Closing the Gap Network (led by applicant Gilbody and theme-led by applicant Gega).
As part of his research experience at the University of York, Daniel has been a co-applicant in several grant applications, including to the NIHR’s EME, i4i and Public Health funding streams, all of which were for projects on young people’s mental health. Daniel has also co-facilitated workshops with children and adolescents as part of Gega’s project on digital games; his involvement included engaging the workshops’ participants in data collection and summarising the workshops’ findings. He has also co-produced an audio podcast with the University of York’s Media Relations entitled “The Story of Children’s Mental Health”, along with researchers from the University.
Outside the University of York, Daniel was previously a co-facilitator in INVOLVE’s Y-PAG NE, the Young People’s Advisory Group in the North of England, supported by the North East and North Cumbria CRN Network, where young people review grant applications and discuss project proposals put forward by academics and NHS practitioners. Daniel also attended national meetings representing Y-PAG. He is particularly knowledgeable about aspects of research that are outward-facing and involve lay people and non subject experts, such as research ethics applications, materials for explaining a project and for inviting participants and recruiters, and communication strategies to engage wider audiences.
